How to open photos in Photoshop

There are two primary methods for opening images in Adobe Photoshop. You can open the file on its own for editing, or, you can open a file to be included as a layer in an image that you already have open. To learn how to perform either of these actions, choose the appropriate section below and follow the instructions.
Editing an image by itself
Editing an image by itself
If you want to use the image with its existing dimensions:
- Select File from the menu bar.
- Select Open.
- Locate and select the file from File Explorer or Finder.
- Select Open.
Adding an image to an existing project
If you want to add a new image to your existing project in the form of a layer:
- Make sure your project is open.
- Select File from the menu bar.
- Select Place Embedded.
- Locate and select the file from File Explorer or Finder.
- Select Open.
- Press the Enter key to rasterize the image, creating a layer in your project.
